Fort Regent was built on what until 1806 had simply
been Town Hill. It formed the major part of Jersey’s
Napoleonic Defences. The Fort replaced Elizabeth Castle
in St Aubin’s Bay which as an offshore fort wasn’t a great
deal of use for defending the island as was discovered
during the English Civil War when Elizabeth Castle was
held in opposition to the rest of the island.
Moribund after WWII, in 1967 it was turned into a sports
centre, with the concrete dome that dominates Queen’s
Hall briefly holding international size records.
Queen’s Hall is currently home to Regent Fencing Club on a
Tuesday (visitors welcome) and junior courses run in the
week.
